Michelle Hooper

Rugby World Cup 2021 Tournament Director
New Zealand

Michelle Hooper is Tournament director of Rugby World Cup 2021. The tournament saw the following successes achieved here on home-soil for the first time in history.

  • Sold out Eden Park the first time in history for women’s sport (never done before), now been done twice during the tournament with the Final a sell-out too
  • Smashed the World Rugby attendance record at a RWC with Attendance of 34,250 people (previously 20,000 RWC 2014 record) hoping to break this again in the Final
  • Smashed New Zealand’s women’s sports attendance record, more than doubling the previous record of 16,000 for FIFA football
  • Smashed domestic broadcast figures with over 1 million people tuning into watch the semi-final match on TV and hoping to break this again at the Final

Michelle and her team are on a mission to ‘Super-charge’ women’s rugby and in doing so change the narrative for women’s sport, here in Aotearoa and globally, to create a sustainable pathway for the commercialisation of women’s rugby and professional pathways for aspiring rugby players in the future. With over 25 years experience working in professional sport and major international event delivery for the likes of World Rugby, FIFA, ITU, NZOC, America’s Cup and Team New Zealand this is Michelle’s first event for women’s sport and being part of the cornerstone for change for the visibility of women’s sport is exhilarating.
